I am embarrassed about my condition where I have some leakage of urine.

Can you help me in explaining it to my partner, do you think I should expect him to reject or leave me?

Our expert answered:

Incontinence can have some widespread effects on and for family members, friends and society in general. Some people can cope reasonably well with little disruption to their lifestyle, whereas others experience anxiety, embarrassment, sexual difficulties, impaired social and mental health well being or the unwillingness to do a range of activities.

The degree of problems that can be experienced doesn't necessarily correlate with the actual volume of urinary Incontinence but more the coping ability of those affected.

There are services available that can support the physical aspects as well as the mental health aspects Incontinence can cause. Services such as the Continence Foundation of Australia, local health care centres, specialist doctors and GPs, Continence Advisors, allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, psychologists, counsellors etc.

The best thing to do is to contact the Continence Foundation of Australia on 1800 33 00 66 and they can provide local services in your area to help you manage the varying issues that Incontinence can cause, including how to help loved ones understand.
