If I reduce the amount of water I drink, will that help me not have any wetting accidents?

Also, if I don't drink as much will the desperate urge to go also lessen?

Our expert answered:

Not at all.

The less fluid that you drink, directly affects the strength the bladder muscle, lessening it. This in turn, results in increasing the frequency of the passing of urine as the bladder cannot store large amounts of urine. And if the urine is more concentrated, this can irritate the bladder further to.

So it is very important to maintain a good fluid intake, approximately 1.5 litres per day (preferably water) as a minimum, to meet the body's general health and well being needs.

It is important to remember that this total amount of fluid does not include caffeine containing fluids, such as tea, coffee, chocolate and soft drinks especially coke. Caffeine containing fluids cause bladder irritation resulting in dehydration and an increased urge and frequency of the passing of urine. Dehydration is caused from the body accessing fluids from everywhere to dilute the irritation.

Increased urge and frequency of the passing of urine is because the bladder is irritated and needs to pass urine more frequently to get rid of this irritation.
