My mother recently had an operation to insert a Pacemaker after suffering a slow heartbeat and since then she is Incontinent and noboby at the Hospital took any notice. She is 83 and other than this she is in good health.
When she is sitting down she is okay, but when she gets up she has a trickle .
Our expert answered:
Dear Ruby
It sounds like your mother is suffering from stress incontinence. As our bodies age, our muscles weaken. When your mother is stands up, there is increased pressure on her pelvic floor muscles which may not be as strong as they used to be. As a result, she will get the small trickle.
To help her manage the condition, it is best for her to use an absorbent product such as Poise products or even Depend products if she requires something more absorbent (www.depend.com.au). If she is able to, you can also encourage her to try pelvic floor exercises to strengthen her muscles.
Finally, some medications can also have a side effect of incontinence so it is important to speak to her doctor about this as there may be an easy solution to the problem.
