Our expert answered:

Hello Maureen,

Having a cough can definitely increase the incidence of bladder leakage as continued coughing especially with weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to more leakage.

The best thing to do is get better and get your cough under control so you can work on regaining pelvic floor strength without the impediment of a cough.

Regarding pelvic floor exercises, in short yes Pelvic Floor Exercises work to strengthen the muscles which support your bladder. If you have Pelvic Floor weakness which is leading to Bladder Leakage then Pelvic Floor Exercises will definitely help. Remember pelvic floor muscles are just like any other muscle in your body. The more they are worked, the stronger they will be. The key is consistency so make sure to do your exercises regularly.
