Poise® Ask an Expert gives you the opportunity to submit a question to our panel of qualified continence nurses regarding your bladder weakness issues and worries.

I am 59,on estrogen, over weight for last 15 years, and have an irritable bladder for which I have medication. My BIG problem now is that I wake up during the night desperate to urinate.
Until the last couple of months I only lost a small amount (20cpiece) of urine at one time, maybe twice a week, when doing the usual (sneezing, laughing suddenly, coughing)or stepping into the car(legs apart problem). The night time problem is new this year.It always happens from a deep sleep. At first it was only when I stood up beside the bed-had to grab the crotch(little girl style!)before heading for the toilet. Now it's started happening if I am still lying down and I don't get my legs together quickly enough. I have started stashing clean clothing so I can change w/o my husband knowing- I feel dreadful that this is happening to me.
Our expert answered:
Dear AW,
You mentioned that you have had a past history of bladder issues and that your night time problem is a fairly new occurance. Any new changes needs to be investigated for an underlying cause and therefore we would recommend you have a medical assessment. You can contact the National Continence helpline where you can speak confidentially to a nurse advsior or you can see your local GP to discuss this further.
The National Continence Helpline is a freecall open from 8am to 8pm 1800 33 00 66.
