I have a prolapse bladder. Would pelvic floor exercises be good to rectify the problems or any special exercises are required/and/or operation is the solution?
Our expert answered:
Dear Josephine,
In a mild case of bladder prolapse, yes pelvic floor exercises can strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. Because bladder prolapse usually happens as a result of a significant stress on the vaginal wall, due to childbirth or the fall in oestrogen sharply after menopause, pelvic floor exercises can strengthen the vaginal walls so they can support the bladder in its proper position.
If you bladder prolapse is a result of menopause oestrogen therapy can be recommended by your doctor as well as a pessary, which is a device inserted into the vagina to hold the bladder in its correct position. It sits high inside the vagina and you should not be able to feel it. After your doctor has installed the pessary, you can resume all of your normal day-to-day activities including sex and sports.
For more serious cases of bladder prolapse, yes surgery may be required to reposition the bladder and restore its support function.
The best thing to do would be to discuss this with your doctor or a local nurse continence advisor. They will be able to diagnose whether your bladder prolapse is mild or severe and recommend what's the best course of action for you.
If you're not using any protection at the present time, Poise Liners and Ultrathins are a good way to manage light bladder leakage. They are just as thin but more absorbent than sanitary liners and ultrathins. Request a free sample from the Poise website before you buy.
