What can I do to minimise the impact that menopause has to my body?
It's been hell! Hot flushes, cold sweats, mood swings. And now I'm rushing to the loo! Looking into HRT but curious to know what other things I could do.
Our expert answered:
You can do things to minimise the impact that menopause has on the female reproductive organs.
Such as:
* Limiting caffeine consumption
* Strengthening pelvic muscles with exercises.
These exercises strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. To do Pelvic Floor exercises, you squeeze and hold the pelvic muscles and then relax them. If you are unsure how to do these exercises, ask the Continence Foundation of Australia who can provide information or recommend professionals that can help. You can find their contact details on the information and resources page.
* Training the bladder to hold more urine
* Weight loss for obese women may result in improved bladder control.
* Cutting down on smoking or stopping if possible.
There may be other options as well if required, such as:
* Medications such as Detrol or Ditropan
* Biofeedback, which is a method of learning to voluntarily control certain body functions with the help of a special machine
* Electrical stimulation of pelvic muscles
* A device inserted in the vagina to hold up the bladder (Pessary)
* A device inserted directly into the urethra to block leakage
* Surgery to lift a sagging (prolapsed) bladder into a better position. but unless you strengthen the Pelvic Floor muscles this surgery will not remain effective and may have to be done again
