What is the common type of incontinence caused from pregnancy?
Just TTC and it's one of those things your friends just don't talk about :-)
Our expert answered:
Well good luck to you with getting pregnant! And you are right, many women fail to let each other know in advance about how a pregnancy can affect their bladder.
The most common form of Urinary Incontinence as a result of pregnancy is Stress Urinary Incontinence. This is because of the direct intra-abdominal pressure caused by the developing foetus as well as the exertion creating pressure on the Pelvic Floor Muscles during the birthing phase.
However, what is interesting to note, as well as somewhat disturbing, is that the incidence of Stress Urinary Incontinence is increasing in younger women, teenagers, as well as males of all ages. This is hardly surprising as lack of exercise and poor diet encourages obesity, which consequently creates more pressure exerted on the Pelvic Floor muscles for both genders and all ages.
So my best advice in preparation for getting pregnant is to work on strengthening your pelvic floor muscles and keep it up during your pregnancy as the baby grows. You'll be doing yourself a favour in the long run by keeping your bladder weakness at a minimum and speeding up your recovery post birth.
